Stage 0 Overview
Learning Java is the most important step in learning FRC programming. Using Java, we can write code that allows a robot to run a motor, adjust its speed, and much more. There’s a lot to learn about Java, but Stage 0 only covers the basics you’ll need for robot code.
Each lesson in Stage 0 covers a different essential topic, and builds on the lessons before it. If you’re new to programming, go through the lessons in order.
This stage covers the following topics:
- Java Fundamentals
- Debugging
- Operators
- Conditionals
- Loops
- Classes and Objects
- Methods and Mutable State
- Arrays and For-Each Loops
- Interfaces, Generics, and Lists
Stage 0 has exercises at the end of each page. The exercise need to be opened on the 2027 WPILib VS Code in order to run. If you have not installed the 2027 WPILib VS Code, follow the instructions in Required Tools.
On macOS, the VS Code icon has not been modified to the WPILib icon, and the name still says Visual Studio Code. This is noted in VS Code Overview. Therefore, make sure that your VS Code is 2027 WPILib VS Code before starting.
